The Market Railway – Bangkok

The Mae Klong Railway was constructed in two phases and since its construction the railway has been a source of income and a useful transport system to its people. Thai Railways Company Limited was established in 1901 with the concession from the crown of Thailand in building railway lines, Bangkok-Samut Sakhon Railway or Mahachai Line constructed and operated 33-kilometer long railway and begun the operation in 1904 having eight stations. A year later, Maeklong Railway Company operated Ban Laem Line with the length of 34 km and including 3 steam engine locomotives. The two longs joined in 1907 and formed the Maeklong Railway Ltd. Its initial purpose was the goods carriage, particularly the fishery goods between fishing harbors of Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkram and the markets in Bangkok.

The railway became famous for its route through the Maeklong Railway Market, nicknamed (Thai: ท่ารถ(“$)): ঘ; RTGS: Talat Rom Hup or the ‘umbrella pulldown market’. It is one of Thailand’s largest fresh seafood markets, resting right on the Maeklong Railway track.

Though there were market places which had been existing long before, construction of railway along the market places saw the vendors not being driven away. They did so, and developed what is now termed the railway market of which you see something of when taking a railway journey.
