It’s a vaccine used to prevent from a dangerous disease called tetanus (lock jaw).tetanus is a serious but rare bacterial infection which affects the nervous system and causes muscle contraction especially your jaw and neck through the toxins released by the bacteria.once an individual affected with the disease there is no cure.so it’s better to be prevented than cure.
Who should get the vaccine?
recommended tetanus vaccine schedule is:
DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 to 18 months, and 4 to 6 years
Tdap booster at age 11 or 12
Tdap or Td booster shot for adults every 10 years
Tetanus booster during the third trimester of pregnancy, regardless of vaccination status
If you were already vaccinated but should get a shot of vaccine when.
There is break in continuity of skin probably a wound which may be contaminated with soil or dirt or rust.
Injury caused by foreign body such as nails,iron rods etc
Trauma (accident)
Before any surgery
During the third trimester of pregnancy
Non traumatic wounds such as diabetic wound and any arterial or venous ulcer
Animal and snake bite (note :bites or injury from dog , monkey and bats can cause severe called rabies for that an individual should take anti rabies vaccine along with tetanus toxoid.,we will read about this in upcoming chapters)
Appropriate time :
Get your vaccine within 48 hours of injury.its not advisable to delay in vaccination.get your vaccine asap.and the ideal time is always before 24 hours so don’t wait much if you have encountered any of the above mentioned causes get vaccine immediately without any hesitation.
Where to get?
As these vaccine is very vital it will be available in all primary health centres and near by clinic.
Location?
It is advisable to get your vaccine injection over a deltoid muscle (shoulder).as gulteal site is not preferable site now a days.
Who don’t need vaccine?
There is broad ideology among our people is to get the vaccine when you feel sick.its not mandatory to vaccine if you have just the symptoms of fever or sore throat or vomiting or diarrhoea or any bacterial or viral infection untill you been encountered by the indication of the vaccine .
Adverse effects of vaccination?
The individual may experience mild headache, body pain, headache..but usually notable adverse effect haven’t been reported yet.
